04 Is Freemasonry a secret society?

Freemasonry is not a secret society. It is a society that has certain secrets. These are concerned with the traditional modes of recognition and the various ceremonies that are conducted.

To share a secret is to bond together. Families have “secrets”— known only to members of the family that help to unite them. In that way also, Masonic secrets are a form of bonding.

All members are free to acknowledge their membership when asked. If there are genuine enquiries about Freemasonry, Masons will answer appropriately.
